Morfologie

De vier soorten Hamamelis zijn moeilijk van elkaar te onderscheiden. De morfologie van de plant, de bloemen en de vruchten zijn opmerkelijk gelijkend. Het onderscheid wordt gemaakt op basis van herkomst, habitus, habitatvoorkeur, tijdstip van anthese en kleine maar toch duidelijke morfologische verschillen. 

Beschrijving van Hamamelis zoals gepubliceerd door Rehder, 1940 :

"Deciduous shrubs or small trees with stellate pubescence; buds naked, stalked; leaves short-petioled, oblique at base, sinuate-dentate, with caducous, rather large stupules; flowers perfect, in short-penduncled, axillary few-flowered clusters; calyx four-parted, with spreading ovate obtuse lobes, tomentose outside; petals four linear, crumpled in bend; stamens four with short filaments, alternating with scalelike staminodia; styles distinct, short; capsules two-valved with the calyx-limb about or below the middle; seeds two, lustrous black, oblong. Four species in North America and eastern Asia."
