Vrijbroekpark

The Vrijbroek Park is a 50 hectare green lung, located on the outskirts of the city of Mechelen. The perfect place to stroll, dream the day away on a cafe terrace, exercise or cast admiring glances at our plant collections.

The marsh is a low-lying area and naturally it is wet. A squirrel

Beautiful parks and gardens

The avenues and water gardens give the park a stately impression, but it is the rose garden that makes it magnificent. In 2003, the garden, which has more than 1,000 types of roses, was awarded the prestigious ‘Award of Garden Excellence’ prize.

With the borders of perennials, the herb garden and the dahlia and fuchsia collection, in the Vrijbroekpark you get to see a part of the Belgian art of horticulture.

A park where you can learn

The park devotes much attention to education: plants are clearly labelled, walking trail brochures are available and guided tours for groups can be arranged on request.

In addition, gardening and nature courses are held in winter and spring. All the details are available in our ‘green agenda’. We arrange walking tours for schools, making it fun for students to both learn about and experience nature. Students can also practice their cycling skills together with their classmates in the safety of the ‘Biesieklette’ road training ground

Themed activities

So as to make the park known beyond the city limits, we host a variety of themed activities, such as Park Day, Rose Festivals, and the Harvest Festivals. These celebrations are a great mix of instructive green activities, action and fun.
