PLANTCOL

For an up-to-date and extensive inventory of living plants at the arboretum garden, please refer to the website of the PLANTCOL project.

What is PLANTCOL?

PLANTCOL is an electronic information system which coordinates genetic sources of living plant material for woody plants in Belgian plant collections.

Due to the global biodiversity crisis it has become clear that the conservation and management of genetic sources is very important. Experience shows that time and time again thoroughly executed inventories of botanical collections bring to light several varieties of plants and cultivars which were thought to be no longer cultivated.

The goal of PLANTCOL is to draw up an inventory of genetic sources of living plant material from Belgian collections. All information is collected in an electronic database that is very useful for managers, policymakers and the international community, partly due to the coordinating electronic information system.

Who manages this inventory?

PLANTCOL is a project of the Vereniging voor Botanische Tuinen en Arboreta vzw carried out within the framework of the ‘Multi-year support programme for the expansion of the information society’, an initiative of the programming Federal Department of Scientific Policy. The coordination and administration of the project is carried out by Arboretum Kalmthout.
