Plant collections

At Arboretum Kalmthout you will find plants from all over the world. They grow there freely in beautiful arrangements. A walk around the Arboretum garden is a real journey of discovery of the wonderfully varied world of plants.

A living museum

Arboretum Kalmthout is a sort of living museum for plants. Just like in a museum all the plants are entered in a register and have a scientific and educational purpose. 

The plant collections are very diverse but mainly divided into ornamental garden plants, trees and shrubs in the first place. As a result, apart from the botanical varieties, many other varieties and cultivars also grow there.  

International recognition

Arboretum Kalmthout has a strong reputation abroad. Various international prizes and awards have already been conferred upon the park. 

The most important are undoubtedly:

  • International Dendrology Society with a general Award for Merit.
  • American Association of Botanic Gardens and Arboreta with recognition of the collection and selection work of Hamamelis, witch hazel.      

Global collection

In order to build up the plant collections, Arboretum Kalmthout works closely with botanical gardens, arboreta and other organisations within Belgium and abroad. 

For instance, there are arrangements with the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK and Botanic Gardens Conservation International.

Arboretum Kalmthout is highly esteemed internationally for its special plant collections. The park has already been awarded several prizes and is therefore very highly thought of among foreign institutes. Awards from the International Dendrology Society and the American Association of Botanic Gardens and Arboreta speak for themselves.
